Gaffert, a Dutch crane rental and transport company, has used a Grove GMK5250XL-1 to install glass panels on an office development in Amsterdam.
The work involved placing new panels in the glass atrium at the top of The Edge complex. For the job, the all-terrain crane was configured with a 78.5 m main boom, a 17.8 m hydraulic bi-fold swingaway jib, and an 8 m jib extension. The crane operated with 70 t of counterweight and handled multiple glass panels, each weighing 600 kg, at a reported radius of 78 m. During the lift, the main boom was set at 45 degrees and the hydraulic jib at 50 degrees.
The crane is a five-axle unit in the 250 t class, with a maximum tip height that can be extended up to 109 m depending on configuration. The model includes MEGATRAK suspension, MEGAFORM boom shaping, and TWIN-LOCK pinning, Grove CONNECT telematics, and the MAXbase variable outrigger system.

Power for both the carrier and the superstructure comes from a 390 kW Mercedes-Benz OM471LA engine. The engine can run on conventional diesel or HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil). The stated outrigger base is 9 m x 7.8 m, while the travel footprint is 15.6 m x 2.99 m.
“Positioning glass panels on the roof of such a prestigious development adds pressure, but we had complete confidence in our GMK5250XL-1, and it delivered excellent performance again.”
Commented Theo Gaffert, owner and director of Gaffert.
The Grove GMK5250XL-1 was chosen for its combination of reach, capacity, and precise control, making it ideal for the challenging lift conditions and the job’s high-profile nature. It has also been used on other long-reach projects in Amsterdam.
The crane was supplied through Manitowoc’s facility in Breda, the Netherlands, which provides parts, service, maintenance, training, and EnCORE rebuild and refurbishment services.
