How Compact Track Loaders Help Contractors Take On More Work

For many contractors, versatility is one of the most valuable traits a machine can offer. Whether it’s loading material, clearing brush, grading a site or supporting excavation work, equipment that can perform multiple tasks throughout the year can help maximize efficiency while reducing the need for additional machines on the jobsite.

That versatility is one reason compact track loaders (CTLs) continue to gain popularity across Canada. Designed to work in a wide range of conditions and compatible with numerous attachments, CTLs have become a go-to solution for businesses looking to expand capabilities while maintaining a compact footprint.

For Jason Rottier, owner of Rottier Excavating in Wallaceburg, Ont., the decision to invest in a compact track loader was driven by the need for a machine that could support an expanding operation and adapt to a variety of applications. “I use it for everything,” says Rottier. “Landscaping, bush removal, loading dump trucks, cutting wood. If it lasts for what I do, then it’s a solid piece of equipment.”

Comfort That Supports Long Days

For operators spending long hours in the cab, comfort can have a direct impact on day-to-day performance. Features such as increased legroom, improved visibility and upgraded seating can help reduce fatigue during demanding workdays.

After initially purchasing a Kubota SVL65-2, Rottier upgraded to the Kubota SVL75-3 in search of additional horsepower and operator-focused enhancements.

“I wanted to upgrade to something with a little more horsepower and ergonomics,” he explains. “There is a lot of leg room in the SVL75-3. The Air Ride seat is nice. I have lower-back issues and I can sit in that thing for 10 hours a day.” The machine’s spacious cab design and roll-up door also help make entry and exit easier throughout the day, particularly for operators who frequently move between the machine and the jobsite.

Productivity Across Applications

As businesses look to take on a wider variety of work, machine performance becomes increasingly important. CTLs are commonly used for tasks ranging from site preparation and material handling to land clearing and attachment-driven applications.

For Rottier, the increased horsepower and operating capacity of the SVL75-3 opened the door to additional opportunities.

“The pushing power of the SVL75-3 is great. It’s like a small dozer,” he says. “Now I have the horsepower and weight to run a forestry mulcher and do more kinds of jobs.” Vertical lift designs can also help improve loading performance when working with dump trucks and other material handling applications. According to Rottier, the additional reach height provided a noticeable benefit during everyday operations.

Simplifying Maintenance

Downtime can quickly impact project schedules and profitability. As a result, equipment owners often prioritize machines that are designed with serviceability in mind.

Features such as accessible service points and simplified maintenance procedures can help reduce the time required for routine upkeep and inspections.

“It’s nice when you can get your arms in and see the hydraulics and not have to dismantle everything and take all the panels off,” says Rottier. “With the SVL75-3, you open the door and flip the hatch up and the whole thing’s open.” For smaller operations that perform routine maintenance in-house, ease of service can contribute to improved machine uptime and fewer disruptions throughout the workweek.

Beyond the Machine

Equipment performance is only one part of the ownership experience. Dealer support, parts availability and product knowledge can also play a significant role in helping businesses keep projects moving.

According to Eric Vanderlinde, sales representative at SouthPoint Equipment in Wyoming, Ont., dealer training and customer support remain important priorities.

“One thing that is very big, not only for our dealership but also for Kubota Canada, is training,” says Vanderlinde. “Kubota has dedicated field product specialists to teach both our salespeople and our customers about the equipment.” For equipment buyers evaluating their next machine purchase, the combination of machine capability, operator comfort, ease of maintenance and dealer support can all contribute to long-term value. As businesses continue looking for ways to improve efficiency and expand services, compact track loaders remain an increasingly important tool for helping them take on more work with confidence.
