Hyundai Construction Equipment is expanding its European crawler excavator range with the launch of the HX230, a new 23-tonne model designed to raise efficiency, comfort and control in one of the market’s most competitive weight classes.

The 22–23 tonne segment remains a core category for earthmoving contractors, rental fleets, roadbuilding crews and general construction companies. These machines are expected to dig, load, lift and work with attachments across a wide range of jobsites, while keeping fuel use, downtime and operator fatigue under control.

With the HX230, Hyundai is positioning its latest platform around three practical priorities: lower operating costs, more precise machine control and a better working environment for the operator.

At the centre of the machine is Hyundai’s DX05 four-cylinder, 5-litre twin-turbo diesel engine, compliant with Stage V emissions standards. The engine delivers 141 kW, or 189 hp, and 955 Nm of torque, giving the HX230 one of the more powerful outputs in the 23-tonne class.

Hyundai says the new model consumes up to 7% less fuel and up to 30% less AdBlue than the A-Series machine it replaces. For fleet owners, the maintenance story may be just as important: service intervals have been extended to 1,000 hours, double the interval of the previous model.

Hydraulic performance is managed through Hyundai’s EPOS Electric Power Optimising System, which controls flow rates to reduce unnecessary energy loss. The HX230 also uses Full Electrohydraulic control levers, replacing conventional hydraulic pilot controls with electric joysticks and pump control. In practical terms, this should improve response, accuracy and efficiency, especially in applications where operators move repeatedly between digging, grading, lifting and attachment work.

Hyundai has also added a broader package of operator assistance and safety technologies. The HX230 can be equipped with 2D machine control and guidance, with the option to upgrade to 3D. An Automatic Weighing Function is available to support faster and more accurate loading, while Lift Assist and Advanced Lift Assist help operators maintain stability when handling heavy loads.

Safety around the machine is another focus. Hyundai’s Smart Around View Monitor has been upgraded from the previous four-camera system to a six-camera setup mounted on the upper structure. The system includes AI-based human detection, designed to alert operators to people around the excavator. The HX230 can also be fitted with Radar Object Detection, while an available auto stop function can halt machine movement when required. An E-Boundary option adds another layer of protection by helping prevent collisions within restricted working zones.

Inside the cab, Hyundai has moved the HX230 closer to the expectations of modern fleet operators, who increasingly view operator comfort as a productivity issue rather than a luxury. The new cab can be specified with one, or optionally two, 12.8-inch high-definition touchscreen monitors. Seating, lighting and storage have been improved, while a Comfort Pack adds premium seating, multi-channel audio and upgraded floor coverings. A four-corner beacon system improves site visibility from all angles.

The machine’s structure has also been revised. A 4.9-tonne counterweight, 29% heavier than the previous model’s, gives the HX230 additional stability. Hyundai lists a dipper arm breakout force of 116 kN and a bucket breakout force of 164 kN, placing the machine among the more powerful options in the 22-tonne sector.

The HX230 will be offered with several boom and arm configurations. Customers can choose a 5.7 m monoboom, a two-piece articulating boom, or an 8.5 m long-reach boom on the HX230LR. Dipper arm options include 2.4 m, 2.9 m and 3.5 m for the monoboom, 2.4 m and 2.9 m for the two-piece boom, and 6.2 m for the long-reach version. Maximum digging depth reaches 7,220 mm with the monoboom, 6,490 mm with the two-piece boom and 11,665 mm on the long-reach model.

Like other Next Generation Hyundai models, the HX230 comes with HiMATE telematics, providing real-time machine monitoring, positioning and health alerts. Hyundai’s Equipment Health Monitoring system is designed to predict component issues before they cause downtime, supporting more planned maintenance and fewer unexpected stoppages.
