JCB has expanded its X-Series crawler excavator lineup with the new 520X, a 50-tonne class machine that now sits at the top of the range. With this addition, the manufacturer completes its Heavyline excavator family, joining the 370X and 420X to cover the core high-production segments.
Key specifications at a glance
The 520X is powered by a Cummins X12 diesel engine rated at 298 kW (400 hp). The machine is available with multiple boom and arm configurations and can be ordered with a variable gauge undercarriage option. The excavator also features the CommandPlus cab and the JCB UX user interface.
52 to 57 tonnes operating weight, with two boom choices
The 520X sits in a new segment for the X-Series tracked excavator range, with an operating weight between 52 and 57 tonnes, depending on specification.
Two main boom configurations are offered:
- 6.9 m standard boom, positioned as the more versatile setup
- 6.5 m mass excavation boom, aimed at higher-output loading and digging cycles
Arm options depend on the boom selection:
- With the 6.5 m mass excavation boom, customers can choose a 2.55 m or 3.0 m heavy-duty arm
- With the 6.9 m reach boom, customers can choose a 3.0 m or 3.3 m arm
Bucket capacity is listed at 2.8 to 3.4 m³, depending on specification.
Digging performance and working ranges
The new excavator’s maximum digging reach is of 11.8 m with the reach boom and longer arm, and the maximum digging depth of 7.8 m. Maximum dump height is 7.5 m, positioning the machine for loading, bulk excavation, and high-cycle earthmoving duty.
The 520X is quoted with:
- Dipper tearout force up to 279 kN
- Bucket tearout force up to 318 kN
Powertrain and hydraulics
The excavator’s 11.8-litre Cummins X12 delivers 298 kW (400 hp) at 1,800 rpm, with 1,969 Nm of torque at 1,400 rpm.
Hydraulics are driven by twin variable displacement axial piston pumps, each producing 404 l/min of flow. JCB says the system uses a latest-generation Japanese hydraulic package tuned for efficiency, supported by larger diameter pipework and a hydraulically driven cooling fan intended to reduce fuel consumption. A dual slew motor system is aimed at maintaining competitive cycle times during digging and loading.
Undercarriage, counterweight, and protection packages
In the standard Earthmoving Pro specification, two heavy-duty undercarriage options are available:
- Fixed 2,740 mm track gauge
- Mechanically adjustable variable width track gauge from 2,390 mm to 2,890 mm
Track pad choices range from 600 mm to 900 mm, allowing matching to ground conditions and transport needs.
Counterweight options include:
- Fixed 10.5-tonne counterweight
- Hydraulically removable 9.8-tonne counterweight
For tougher environments, JCB offers an optional Heavy-Duty Pro Pack, which includes additional protection such as side impact plates, belly plates, bucket ram guards, and working light guards. Both Earthmoving Pro and Heavy-Duty Pro variants can also be ordered with foldable side walkways to ease service access.
Cab, interface, and safety systems
All X-Series machines use JCB’s CommandPlus cab, and Heavyline models are described as being supplied in Pro specification as standard. The cab includes a heated and ventilated seat with electric lumbar adjustment.
The JCB UX interface includes a 10-inch full-colour touchscreen that can be customised. Operators can set hotkeys and create up to 25 user profiles to store joystick and switch preferences. JCB has also introduced keyless start on the X-Series, with a button press used to turn the display on or off.
On safety and visibility, JCB states:
- The cab is ROPS certified as standard
- 2-Go hydraulic isolation system is fitted
- A high-definition 360-degree camera is standard and integrated into the UX display
- 14 LED working lights are fitted as standard
Telematics and service support
The 520X comes with JCB LiveLink telematics for machine monitoring; customers can access operating data including fuel consumption, idling time, and fuel levels, alongside service warnings and maintenance requirements. Remote geolocation functions are also included for security.
JCB will unveil the 520X at Hillhead 2026, taking place on 23-25 June in Buxton, UK.
