With the R 948 G8, R 952 G8 and R 958 G8, Liebherr is targeting contractors, quarry operators and mining fleets that need more machine choice, higher uptime and smarter operator support in the 50-tonne class.

Liebherr is expanding its crawler excavator portfolio in the 50-tonne segment with three new Generation 8 models designed for different ends of the heavy-duty market. The R 948 G8, R 952 G8 and R 958 G8 bring together reinforced structures, new assistance systems, the emCAB operator’s cab and the INTUSI interface, giving fleet owners a broader set of machines for earthmoving, extraction and mining applications.

Liebherr has positioned the three models around specific applications. The R 948 G8 is aimed primarily at earthmoving work. It features an LC chassis, dedicated equipment and optimized motorization intended to reduce fuel consumption without compromising power. For contractors working across infrastructure, site preparation or large-scale excavation, that balance between performance and fuel efficiency is likely to be a key part of the machine’s appeal.

The R 952 G8 sits at the centre of the new range and is designed as the most versatile model. Liebherr offers three chassis variants, a wide selection of equipment configurations and increased engine power, allowing the excavator to be adapted to a wide range of operating conditions. That flexibility matters for mixed fleets, rental companies and contractors that need one machine platform to cover several types of work.

At the heavier end of the line-up, the R 958 G8 has been developed for demanding mining and extraction applications. The model is equipped with a robust S-HD chassis, mass excavation equipment and dedicated options intended to support performance in tough mining environments. For quarrying and mining operators, the focus is less on a single headline specification and more on whether the machine can deliver consistent output in punishing cycles.

Availability has been a central part of the design brief. The new excavators use reinforced structures made from high-strength steels and steel castings, with the overall construction designed to improve operational readiness and reduce downtime. Liebherr has also focused on simplifying daily service work, with an accessible engine platform, safer access points and an automatic central lubrication system integrated into the human-machine interface. The lubrication concepts are automatically adapted to protect components and support long service life.

Productivity is supported by Liebherr Technology Positive Control hydraulic systems, designed to provide fast, sensitive and harmonised movements. The machines also introduce a wider package of assistance systems. Liebherr Power Efficiency, or LPE, is designed to cut fuel consumption by up to 10% without reducing performance. Bucket Fill Assist automates the bucket-filling process to help maintain productivity over longer working periods, while Modetronic adjusts machine parameters according to the application.

Digital control also plays a larger role. The models come with an integrated passive 2D control system as standard, developed in collaboration with Leica Geosystems. This is complemented by an integrated dynamic weighing system, with 500 machine hours included as standard to support controlled and precise loading. A 3D control solution is available as an option and can be expanded with semi-automated functions for higher precision and productivity.

Inside the cab, Liebherr has fitted the new excavators with its latest-generation emCAB operator environment and the INTUSI user interface. The control layout has been redesigned to improve visibility and accessibility, while electric joysticks are intended to provide precise and smooth machine movements. For operators working long shifts in earthmoving, quarrying or mining, the cabin and interface upgrades are aimed at reducing fatigue while keeping productivity stable throughout the working cycle.

Safety has also been built into the package. Camera assistance systems are standard, improving visibility around the working area. Liebherr’s Skyview 360° system is available as an option, providing an all-round bird’s-eye view of the machine surroundings. Safer access platforms, clear visibility of key fluid levels and low-positioned refuelling and filling points are also intended to make daily work safer and more efficient.

Liebherr will present the R 948 G8, R 952 G8 and R 958 G8 at Steinexpo, where the company is expected to show how the new models fit into its broader crawler excavator strategy. Beyond the event itself, the range signals a more targeted approach to the 50-tonne class: one platform family, three application profiles, and a stronger focus on uptime, machine intelligence and operator efficiency.
