Liebherr’s new A 909 Compact and A 911 Compact Litronic wheeled excavators have been awarded the “Red Dot: Best of the Best” in the Product Design category of the Red Dot Design Award 2026, the programme’s highest distinction.
The two machines received 96 out of 100 “Red Dot Winner Points” from the international jury. The company presented the models publicly for the first time at Bauma 2025 as a new series in the 9- and 11-tonne classes.
A new pair of compact wheeled excavators
The A 909 Compact and A 911 Compact Litronic are positioned as compact wheeled excavators for urban job sites, where road mobility and manoeuvrability in tight spaces are key. They combine a compact layout with hydraulic system and controls focused on precise operation.
Operator ergonomics were a central part of the development. Both machines offer the largest cab interior in their class, alongside improved access and optimised all-round visibility. The excavators feature the INTUSI operating system, a configurable interface that allows operators to customise screen layouts and joystick functions.

About the Red Dot Design Award
The Red Dot Design Award is an international design competition that has been running since 1955. An independent jury assesses entries made up of experts from different fields, using criteria that include functionality, usability, responsibility and overall design quality.
The award is divided into three sections: Product Design, Brands & Communication Design and Design Concept. Selected projects are featured in Red Dot publications, shown in exhibitions at the Red Dot Design Museums and presented through the organisation’s digital channels.
