The new 40 P-Tier Compact Excavator debuts at Equip Exposition with Attachment Manager as standard, a large-machine cab and a new mulching head
For landscapers, rental fleets and utility crews in the US, one line on a spec sheet decides a lot: the operating weight. Stay under 10,000 lb and the machine can be towed between jobs without a driver holding a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Go over, and the logistics get harder.
John Deere’s new 40 P-Tier Compact Excavator is built around that limit. It will be unveiled at Equip Exposition in Louisville, October 20 to 23, 2026, and promises digging and lifting performance that the company associates with larger size classes, in a machine that stays below 10,000 lb.
Configured for the work you do most
The 40 P-Tier comes with a long list of options: a hydraulic pin-grabber coupler, an add-on rear-view camera, a factory-installed thumb, an angle blade and auxiliary hydraulic packages. The idea is to let customers order a “dirt-ready” configuration that matches their most frequent jobs.
Standard on every machine is Attachment Manager, which stores preset hydraulic settings for compatible attachments. Operators recall the right flow and pressure when they change tools, rather than adjusting by feel. In practical terms, that means shorter set-up times and more consistent attachment performance across different operators, a real benefit in rental fleets.

A new mulcher for land clearing
Alongside the excavator, Deere is introducing the ME28 Mulching Head, a compatible attachment for rights-of-way maintenance, fence-line clearing and work in tight spaces. It has a variable-speed motor, a durable rotor and reversible Cubit knife-style teeth designed to extend wear life.
Big-machine cab, fleet connectivity
Inside, the 40 P-Tier borrows from Deere’s larger models: the CommandARM, an 8-inch touchscreen display, an integrated electronic pattern changer, and optional premium Bluetooth radio and rear-view camera. Cab versions offer heat and air conditioning, premium seating and extra storage.
JDLink connectivity is standard, sending machine location and health data to John Deere Operations Center. For fleet managers, that means better visibility on utilisation and uptime, while daily service points are grouped for easy access.

Visitors can find the 40 P-Tier at John Deere’s indoor booth 1110 and at the outdoor demonstration area, booth 7834D. Deere has not yet announced pricing or a date for dealer availability.
