BAJ Freight and Logistics Ltd, a Ghana-based lifting, transport and project logistics contractor, has expanded its mobile crane fleet with a Liebherr LTM 1100-5.3. The 5-axle unit sits in the 100-tonne class and is intended to cover small and mid-sized lifts that would otherwise keep higher-capacity cranes tied up.
The company’s existing mobile crane line-up includes Liebherr machines in the 300-tonne, 220-tonne and 150-tonne classes.
“With our new LTM 1100-5.3, we are now filling a gap below the existing load capacity classes. The crane will handle smaller lifting tasks in future, thereby taking the strain off the larger units in the fleet. The utilisation rate of our three larger cranes is very high – any downtime represents a significant strain for us. The high product quality and reliable local service made the decision to invest in a fourth Liebherr crane an easy one.”
Says Chief Executive Officer Joseph Biney.
Liebherr positions the LTM 1100-5.3 as a roadable, all-round crane for frequent moves between sites. The model features a 62 m telescopic boom and can travel with up to 16.9 t of counterweight while remaining within a 12 t axle load. The crane can also be configured for lower axle loads, down to 9 t, depending on transport requirements.
Safety and control capability were also part of the buying decision. The LTM 1100-5.3 supplied to BAJ is equipped with Liebherr’s LICCON3 crane control system and is the first mobile crane with this generation of control platform to enter operation in Ghana.
BAJ plans to deploy the crane across port logistics and projects serving the mining and oil and gas sectors. Other decisive factors for this renewed investment in a Liebherr crane were the high availability and local service provided by Liebherr in Ghana.
