Skyjack recently launched a new range of hybrid-electric rough-terrain articulated booms with the SJ45 AJHE+ and SJ60 AJHE+. These new machines offer three models of operation with electric, automatic, and manual.
Features on the new line of hybrid electric articulated booms
Available with 51-ft (15.7-m) and 66-ft (20.1-m) working heights and suitable for indoor and outdoor use. The SJ45 AJHE+ and SJ60 AJHE+ models include many of the design features that users come to expect from Skyjack — including Skyjack’s unique EASYDRIVE. The hybrid range also offers high-performance AC electric traction, while pump/generator motors deliver high torque power and consistent multi-function capability.
A 24.8-hp diesel engine provides sustainable and on-board charging. HVO compatibility provides a fossil-free alternative fuel with over 90 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to regular diesel. The engine/generator is configured in series with an electric drive motor, providing mechanical drive power.
Easy charging methods in every mode
The hybrid-electric models have two methods of charging. Firstly, users can plug the machine into an external power source, giving the ability to achieve 100 percent charge using the machine’s onboard smart battery charger. In the electric setting, the machine runs on power derived from the AGM battery pack only. A reserve operation feature prevents a full discharge of the batteries to promote optimum battery life.
Secondly, a series of two settings can be used to charge which delivers a bulk charge of up to 85 percent from the engine on the machine itself. In the automatic setting, the engine starts when the charge level decreases to 35 percent and stops running when the charge level reaches 85 percent. Bulk charging to 85 percent takes less than 2.5 hours.
In the manual setting, the engine can be started at any time and it will charge and maintain the batteries at 85 percent. If the engine is started with the charge level at or above 85 percent, it will run for 3 minutes and then stop.
Skyjack’s new booms also have an optional self-generated power-to-platform feature in the form of a dedicated generator and switch. This feature allows the engine to run continuously and provide power to the platform. If the batteries are charged to 85 percent or above, the engine will continue to run without adding additional charge to the batteries until the power to platform switch is manually turned off.
All electric, four-wheel, axle-based drive provides improved efficiency and rough terrain performance. The drive system uses an AC induction traction motor and AC pump generator/motor system to optimize current torque, power, and speed. An oscillating steer axle works in conjunction with the drive system to keep all four tires in contact with the ground, even in rough terrain. Also, improved traction provides a noticeably smoother ride and consistent multi-function capability delivers a superior operator experience.
Additional features on the boom lifts include:
- Electric axle-based drive
- Oscillating steer axle
- Operator controlled locking rear differential and limited-slip front differential
- Drivable at full height
- 48V system
- Less than 70dBA noise level
- 23A automatic battery charger with battery condition indicator, charges the battery to 80 percent in less than 9 hours and a full charge in less than 15 hours
- Onboard 24.8-hp diesel Hybrid system delivers bulk charge to 85 percent in less than 2.5 hours
- AC induction traction motor
- AC pump generator/motor
- 415 Ah AGM batteries
Skyjack has introduced its ECO mark to support rental companies and major contractors as they face increasing demands for sustainability information.
ECO benefits of the new hybrid booms include:
- 16 percent weight reduction
- 62 percent less fuel
- Reduced emissions
- 3 percent reduction in engine noise (excluding alarms)
- White noise alarm (optional)
- 85 percent recyclable by weight
- E-Boom ECOSTART (Stop-Start system)
- HVO compatible
- Bio-degradable hydraulic oil (optional)
- Telematics
Skynet positions itself as a clear choice for rental companies
“Our new range of hybrid electric rough terrain articulated booms have been developed to provide a clean, quiet, and sustainable rental solution featuring low emissions, lower operating costs, and increased utilization,” shared Skyjack President Charlie Patterson. “As always, our new range remains simple and reliable, providing an environmentally friendly and sustainable choice for rental.”
“The SJ45 AJHE+ and SJ60 AJHE+ have been designed to meet true job site performance expectations, whether it be navigating various rough terrain conditions or lifting the platform,” explained Mark Trowman, product development manager EAME, Skyjack UK. “Increased platform capabilities of up to 454 kg (1000 lbs) — plus a superior driving experience and consistent, multi-function capability — boost productivity and efficiency.”
