The Swedish attachment maker has opened a facility in Dongtan that combines stock, service, a workshop and training under one roof

Steelwrist has opened a new facility in Dongtan, in the greater Seoul area, giving the Swedish tiltrotator specialist a permanent operational base in one of Asia’s most important excavator markets. The site was officially inaugurated on October 2 and followed by two days of open house activities for OEMs, dealers and customers on October 3 and 4.

The move matters because tiltrotators live or die on local support. An attachment that turns an excavator into a multi-tool depends on correct installation, operator confidence and fast access to parts and service, all of which are hard to deliver from the other side of the world.

What the new site brings

The Dongtan facility includes warehouse capacity, customer support, service and a workshop, as well as space for product and technical training. In practical terms, Steelwrist can now hold stock closer to its Korean customers, handle service work locally and train dealers and operators on site rather than relying on remote support.

The location was chosen to bring the company closer to a large share of its customers and dealers in the Korean market.

During the opening days, Steelwrist presented the third generation of its XTR20 tiltrotator and ran live demonstrations of the XR7 Rotor Coupler and the X07 tiltrotator, both fitted with the Open-S compliant SQ40 coupler interface. Incoming CEO Jon Lind also attended the inauguration alongside guests from the Swedish headquarters.

A market still being built

South Korea is home to major excavator manufacturers and a dense network of contractors, but tiltrotator use there is still developing compared with the Nordic countries, where the technology originated and is now standard on many machines.

That is exactly the opportunity Steelwrist is pointing to. “This is an important step for our team here in Korea and something we have been looking forward to,” said Jongchul Chun, Country Manager Korea at Steelwrist. “The new facility brings us closer to many of our customers and dealers and gives us much better possibilities to support them with service, training and product knowledge.”

He added: “We believe there is a great opportunity to further develop the tiltrotator market in Korea, and I am very pleased that we now have an even stronger platform from which to grow together with our customers and partners.”

For contractors, the presence of a local workshop and training centre lowers the barrier to adoption. For OEMs and dealers, it means a partner able to support factory or dealer-fitted installations without long lead times.

Part of a wider push

The Korean opening is the latest in a series of investments by Steelwrist in its global footprint and local customer support. It also comes during a leadership transition at the company, with Jon Lind preparing to take over as CEO of Steelwrist and its sister company Terratech from Stefan Stockhaus, who cut the ribbon in Dongtan.

The real test will come over the next few years: whether a stronger local presence can turn interest in tiltrotators into routine specification on Korean excavators.
