Develon’s new 33-tonne DX300LC-9 drops mechanical pilot controls entirely, and pairs an 8% fuel gain with radar that brings the machine to a halt at two metres

Two things are happening at once in Develon’s new DX300LC-9, and both are worth separating from the feature list.

The first is that the machine has no mechanical pilot controls. The 33-metric-ton crawler excavator runs a fully electro-hydraulic control system in their place, which Develon says delivers up to 8% better fuel efficiency. The second is E-Stop, a system that slows the excavator automatically when it detects a person within 13 feet and brings it to a complete stop when someone comes within 6.5 feet.

The first is an efficiency story. The second changes what happens on a jobsite when someone walks behind a swinging machine.

Why the 30-tonne class

The DX300LC-9 joins the 9 Series alongside the DX230LC-9, DX260LC-9, DX360LC-9 and DX400LC-9. Develon introduced the series at CONEXPO-CON/AGG in March and intends to replace its entire 7 Series lineup in North America over time, so this is a rollout rather than a one-off launch.

The size class it lands in is the workhorse band: mass earthmoving and site development, utility and underground infrastructure, civil and transportation projects, demolition, quarrying and material handling. That last clause carries more weight than it looks. A machine that needs a permit and a specialist trailer costs money every time it moves, and on jobs measured in weeks rather than months the moves add up.

The safety layer

Six cameras, radar sensors and AI-powered human detection give a 360-degree view through the Smart Around View Monitor, offered as an option across the 9 Series. E-Stop sits on top of that and acts rather than warns. Virtual Walls let an operator set digital boundaries so the boom or bucket cannot strike overhead power lines or known underground obstacles.

The direction of travel here is away from alerting the operator and towards constraining the machine. An alarm depends on someone reacting to it in the second that matters. A boundary the machine will not cross does not.

Production and comfort

Advanced Lift Assist shows real-time lifting capacity and flags tipping risk using a dynamic lifting-force table that highlights hazard zones on slopes and uneven ground. Breaker Assist prevents blank firing to protect internal components, and its auto setting removes the continuous button pressing that tires an operator’s hand over a shift. An onboard weighing system tracks production in real time so trucks leave loaded to weight rather than by estimate.

The cab runs a 12-inch touch screen with customisable split views, upgradeable to a dual-monitor setup managing four functions at once. Standard 2D machine guidance and machine control are fitted, with optional 3D for terrain that changes continuously.

Prognostics and Health Management monitors engine oil, hydraulic fluid, main pump and swing motor as standard, with a premium option adding vibration and pressure sensors for real-time diagnostics. A Bluetooth digital key managed through the MY DEVELON app unlocks the cab, starts the engine and sets the air conditioning without a physical key.

“Develon continues to build on the success of our 9 Series lineup of crawler excavators with more machines that help our customers improve their productivity, precision, safety and uptime protection,”

Said Brian Kim, crawler excavator product manager.

What it means for fleets

For a contractor, the 8% fuel figure is the number that goes into a spreadsheet, and on a machine working full shifts it compounds quickly. But the harder-to-price item is the safety stack. Insurers and main contractors are increasingly asking what active protection is fitted on machines working near crews, and answering that with radar and automatic stopping is a different conversation from answering it with mirrors and a beeper.

Develon operates more than 200 dealer locations in North America.
