Volvo Construction Equipment rolled out its updated 23-ton EC230 Electric Excavator, boasting improved battery performance, a revamped cab, an intelligent electro-hydraulic system and advanced technology.
The EC230 Electric excavator and L120 Electric wheel loader are the first medium-sized machines in the Volvo CE electric lineup, which also includes three mini excavators, two compact wheel loaders and an asphalt compactor.
The EC230 Electric was recently showcased at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in Anaheim, California, and Equipment World got a closer look from Volvo CE Excavator Product Manager Sung Sook “SS” Kim. To learn more, check out our video above.
Thanks to its 650-volt lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 450 kWh, the upgraded electric excavator offers a run time of seven to eight hours per charge, depending on application. Fast-charging capabilities allow the battery to charge from 20% to 80% in just one hour with a 250-kW charger.
The EC230 Electric excavator is the first electric model to join Volvo’s next-generation excavator lineup, continuing the rollout of the biggest redesign of its midsize and large excavators in 20 years. Upgrades include:
- A more spacious, comfortable and functional cab with a new seat, increased ventilation, a new footrest, a cooler/heater compartment, keyless start and more.
- An intelligent electro-hydraulic system enabling smoother, more precise movements of the boom, bucket and other attachments.
- An enhanced suite of standard safety and technology features including Volvo Smart View with People and Obstacle Classification, which gives operators a 360-degree view of the excavator’s surroundings and uses a new radar system to detect safety hazards. In alerting the operator, it distinguishes between objects and people.
