The LMD 1200 expands Liebherr’s offering for the mining sector with a machine dedicated to dragline extraction in high-intensity applications. The model combines a configurable boom system, a large steel structure and solutions designed to simplify relocation within the extraction site.

Presented in Nenzing, Austria, on June 30, 2026, the LMD 1200 (Liebherr Mining Dragline 1200) is designed for extraction activities in both wet and dry environments. The boom system can be adapted to site conditions, allowing the machine to work in different configurations. Its maximum lifting capacity is 30 tonnes at a working radius of 40 metres, a figure that places the model in large-scale applications and contributes to the “1200” designation. The machine uses a steel structure dimensioned for continuous operation in severe weather conditions.

The model can be configured with a dragline bucket of up to 12.25 cubic metres and can reach a digging depth of up to 25 metres. Two Liebherr hydraulic motors automatically adjust the speed of the winches to the digging force required, helping to make the bucket filling phase more consistent. Together with the swing system, this cycle management is intended to reduce manoeuvring times and increase handling capacity.

The fairlead integrates a pivoting roller head with rope pulleys and guide rollers, supported by an automatic positioning unit. The system manages rope spooling onto the drum in a more controlled way, limiting wear during operation. This is also supported by the larger rope diameter and standard grooving, which are designed to extend rope service life. The new rope locking system also enables faster replacement, with a direct impact on downtime.

Powertrain, Autonomy and Mobility in the Mine

The powertrain is based on hydraulic components developed for this application to balance available power and pressure management. Operating at reduced hydraulic pressure is intended to limit fuel consumption while maintaining handling capacity suited to continuous work cycles.

The machine has an integrated 1,000-litre tank and an additional 8,270-litre tank, a configuration that can allow up to one week of operation without refuelling. Liebherr also highlights the high proportion of internally developed components, an element that can facilitate spare parts management and contribute to machine availability.

The LMD 1200 is designed to be moved within the site with the boom lowered, reducing the complexity of relocation between working areas. In extraction environments, where downtime directly affects production costs, the ability to move the machine more quickly becomes a relevant factor. Despite its size and an operating weight of 360 tonnes, Liebherr also states that the entire unit can be assembled or disassembled within one week.

Cab, Visibility and Training for Long Shifts

The cab has been designed to support extended working shifts, with a spacious operator environment, acoustic insulation and good visibility over the working area. Cameras installed on the machine extend the field of vision, helping the operator monitor the surrounding environment and the winding of the ropes on the winches.

To improve working conditions during long shifts, the operator station includes tinted safety glass, air conditioning and an orthopaedic seat with heating, cooling and ventilation functions. A second seat is also provided to support practical operator training in the field. The lighting system covers the boom, cab and machine access ways, providing adequate visibility during night work and access operations on the dragline.

Liebherr provides dedicated customer training through the company’s application engineers, supporting the use of the LMD 1200 across different operating conditions. The model was presented in June 2026 during the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH and is now available on the market.
