The International Truck of the Year 2027 award recognizes Volvo’s global battery-electric truck program, from long-range European models to the VNR Electric fleets already operating in North America.
Volvo Trucks’ global heavy-duty electric range has been named International Truck of the Year 2027, giving the manufacturer its eighth win of the award and marking the second time the Volvo FH Electric has received the distinction. More than a trophy, the recognition points to a wider shift in heavy-duty transport: battery-electric trucks are moving beyond early pilot applications and into broader fleet operations.
The award also highlights the global electric truck program behind the Volvo VNR Electric, which has been operating with fleets in the United States and Canada since 2020. For North American customers, that connection matters because the development of Volvo’s latest electric range is tied to several years of real-world operating experience across multiple markets, applications and duty cycles.

The winning line-up includes the Volvo FH Electric with extended range and the next-generation Volvo FH, FM and FMX Electric, all part of Volvo Trucks’ global range. The FH Aero Electric with extended range offers up to 700 kilometers, or about 435 miles, on a single charge. The FH, FM and FMX Electric models offer up to 470 kilometers, or about 290 miles, with higher payload and shorter charging times compared with the previous generation.
For the International Truck of the Year jury, the strength of the range lies not only in distance per charge, but also in flexibility. The jury cited the combination of longer range, multiple cab and chassis configurations, and specifications that can be tailored to a variety of transport assignments. Those applications include regional and long-haul work, city distribution, construction and utility operations.
Roger Alm, president of Volvo Trucks, accepted the award on September 14 at the International Truck of the Year ceremony during IAA Transportation in Hanover, Germany.
For Volvo Trucks North America, the award connects directly to the operational experience already being built by fleets in the United States and Canada.

Since 2019, more than 7,000 electric Volvo trucks have driven more than 500 million kilometers, or 310 million miles, worldwide. Nearly 2,000 customers in more than 50 countries operate electric Volvo trucks in daily service, supported by a global line-up of eight electric truck models.
North America represents a significant part of that operating base. More than 750 Volvo VNR Electric trucks are in operation across the United States and Canada, where they have accumulated nearly 37 million zero-tailpipe emission miles. Those fleets are supported by 84 Volvo Trucks Certified EV Dealership locations across 33 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces.
That service network is a key part of the electrification story. Volvo Trucks certified its first EV dealership in 2021, as the earliest VNR Electric trucks were entering customer service. As a result, sales and service capability developed alongside the trucks themselves, helping build the support ecosystem that electric fleets require.
Volvo Trucks North America works with customers across the full electromobility journey, including route and duty-cycle analysis, charging infrastructure, financing and ongoing service. A major part of that process is helping fleets address one of the most difficult steps in electrification: getting power to the trucks.
The Volvo VNR Electric was commercialized in North America in 2020, with serial production beginning later the same year. A next-generation model followed in 2022, adding range and configurations. The truck has since been used in daily fleet service in drayage, local and regional distribution, pickup and delivery, and food and beverage operations.
Volvo Trucks is also preparing the next stage of its North American electric portfolio. The Volvo VNL Electric, previewed in May 2026, is planned as the fourth truck on Volvo’s new platform, alongside the all-new Volvo VNL, the all-new Volvo VNR and the upcoming Volvo VNX vocational model. Designed for regional haul, drayage and city distribution, it will bring the platform’s comfort, connectivity and safety standards into a zero-tailpipe emission configuration.
